Meet Our Volunteer: Carol Greenwell

This International Bat Week (24–31 October), I’d like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Carol Greenwell, and I’m a Senior Ecologist who has worked in the environmental sector for over six years. Over that time, I’ve developed a strong passion for environmental compliance, which led me to become a volunteer with AEnvCoW in 2025.

Bats have also become one of my greatest interests. Far more than a Halloween symbol, bats are a European Protected Species and the only mammals capable of true flight. They’re also highly effective natural pest controllers – with UK bats feeding exclusively on insects (goodbye, midges!).

In my role, I’m fortunate to carry out a variety of bat surveys, including aerial endoscope inspections of tree features to check for roosting bats. I continue to learn from my “batty” colleagues and gain valuable experience through volunteering with my local bat group, where I also get the chance to handle these fascinating creatures and study their behaviour up close.

Delivering strong environmental compliance, particularly in relation to protected species like bats, is a major passion of mine. I am excited to be bringing that same enthusiasm and expertise to my role with AEnvCoW.
